well... I was the flame guy and can tell you those flames were real... all 35 feet of them... I wore flame proof suit under the designer diesel wear clothes that had been modified with the hood cut off and it was shot on a Winters day (hence the no leaves on trees) and if you look you can see my breath in clip it was a cold night...in February in England 2010... the rest you will have to guess but the mythbusters guys demonstrate how dangerous this was in their recreation of the scene.

it's gotta be CGI. The trees on one side are bare, but the others are green. And the flame is a little too 'gravity defying' for it to be really shooting at the guy, unless they took two different shots and composited them on top of each other. Either way, they're both CGI methods.
